Happy Birthday America!
Today we celebrate the birth of the greatest, freest nation on earth—the United States
of America. The independence of this great nation came through much bloodshed, courage,
perseverance, strength, and hope. We honor all those who fought for our freedom then as well as those in the armed forces who continue to fight to protect it now.
On my mind today is a passage written by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence; it is one of the most powerful statements ever written, and I DECLARE it for every American:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
July 4, 1776 was a day that positively altered the course of human history—not just for our nation, but for the entire world. My hope and my prayer for July 4th, 2020 is that it also goes down in history as a positive day: a day upon which Americans united peaceably, joyfully celebrating the blessings of freedom, while standing for liberty and justice for all.
