Know Yourself, Know Your Worth

All families have favorite stories they like to recount, over and over.   Mine is no exception. This one is about the time my sister went to Wendy’s and ordered a cheeseburger. When she unwrapped it, she found that it all the expected fixings – cheese, tomato, onion, ketchup, and mayo.   The only thing missing was the actual hamburger patty. My sister sat there, looking at her burger-less burger, and seriously considered eating it as-is. “I guess it’s not really that big of a deal,” she...

Merry and Bright

The first Christmas living alone in my own apartment, I purchased and decorated a tree the weekend right after Thanksgiving.  I remember the glimmer of the colorful lights as I cozied up on the couch afterward, sipping a cup of hot tea while admiring my handiwork.  I even left the lights of the tree on at night because I liked the magical glow radiating throughout the apartment. I’ve always loved Christmas lights.  As a child, my dad took my siblings and me for a walk down Jackson Street in Philadelphia,...

Friday Night Enlightenment

A few weekends ago, my husband and I had a (rare) free weekend. So, we eagerly hooked our bikes to the back of our car and headed out for a much-anticipated bike ride along the Lehigh Gorge. To get an early start Saturday morning, we drove up on Friday night to his mother’s little getaway cabin in Parryville PA.   Dusk had settled when we arrived and we expected a quiet and peaceful welcome. That night, however, the echo of drums, trumpets, and cheering reverberated through the crisp autumn air....

The Drifter: The Final Moment

Please enjoy this special five-part series, called The Drifter, by our returning guest blogger, Emily Vincent. It was white. Most people say they see black. When I looked down, I saw a reflection of my former self. Time stood still on the dark road that led out of Georgia. I gazed down it to see if anyone would find what remained of me. Hours passed as the sun peeked its head above the trees that created a canopy over the road. It hid me well. The white car came back around the bend. Last night...

The Drifter: Moment Four

Please enjoy this special five-part series, called The Drifter, written by our returning guest blogger, Emily Vincent.  I slid back into the night. When times got rough I would turn to the night for shelter. I gazed out the window as lamp polls flashed me by. It would be a long way before I reached New Orleans. I didn’t know what I’d find there, but I hoped to find something worth my while. Things had begun to grow tiring. I began to get lonely over the long years of drifting from town to town,...

The Drifter: Moment Three

Please enjoy this special five-part series, called The Drifter, written by our returning guest blogger, Emily Vincent.  I can’t remember her name, but I can recall the time. I was stuck in Philadelphia. During this time, I was trying to get to Washington DC. So, I sat in 30th Street Station to wait for luck to find me. Sure enough, it did. A girl came up to me and noted a pin I had on my book bag that I took everywhere. I told her I bought it in Chinatown in a different state. We ended up talking...

The Drifter: Moment Two

Please enjoy this special five-part series called The Drifter, written by our returning guest blogger, Emily Vincent. It was a hot summer, but aren’t they all? This one had a nice breeze blowing off the Atlantic. I sat by the shore and dug my feet into the cool sand just where the water touched. The boardwalk wasn’t buzzing like it used to back in 1995. There were more people than usual due to the Halestorm concert showing later that night. I made my way back to my crummy motel. It was one of...

The Drifter: Moment One

Over the next two weeks, we will be publishing a special series called The Drifter, written by our returning guest blogger, Emily Vincent. Enjoy! “Why are you here?” Susan asked me. “Why are we all here? To do our best.” I told her. She gave me the most adorable smile. Who knew someone her age could be so cute. I met her family when I was filling up with gas. Susan seemed to be getting impatient. The family was going to Florida to go to Disney World. I gave Susan a lucky coin I had on me, or so...
